5 Mixing Tips Every Producer Should Know

Great mixing starts before you even open a plugin. Here are five fundamentals that will immediately elevate your productions.

1. Gain Staging Set your levels before reaching for EQ or compression. Aim for peaks around -18 dBFS on individual tracks to leave headroom for processing.

2. Cut Before You Boost When EQing, identify problem frequencies and cut first. Boosting too early creates a muddy, unnatural sound.

3. Use Reference Tracks Compare your mix to commercially released tracks throughout the process. Your ears adjust to what they hear — references reset them.

4. Mix at Low Volumes If your mix sounds good quiet, it will sound great loud. High volumes mask imbalances and cause ear fatigue.

5. Take Breaks Your ears tire quickly. A 10-minute break every hour keeps your perspective fresh and your decisions accurate.
