The Art of Lo-Fi Production
Lo-fi is about controlled imperfection. Here's how to get that nostalgic warmth.
Vinyl Simulation Add crackle, dust, and wow/flutter. Plugins like RC-20 or iZotope Vinyl do this well, but even a free sample pack of vinyl noise works.
Bit Crushing and Downsampling Reduce bit depth to 12–16 bits and sample rate to 22kHz for that classic sampler sound reminiscent of the SP-1200 or MPC60.
Tape Saturation Gentle tape saturation adds harmonic richness and slight compression. Push it into the mix bus for glue.
Play Slightly Out of Time Quantize loosely or not at all. Human timing imperfections are what make lo-fi feel alive.
Use Dusty Samples Jazz, soul, and bossa nova records from the 60s and 70s are the foundation. Chop, pitch, and re-layer them.
